Outdoor padel courts
Most US padel courts are outdoors, at homes, clubs, hotels and HOA communities. Outdoors, the court needs an engineered base that drains, steel protected against rust, and glass anchored for local wind. A complete outdoor court with a new foundation and LED lights typically costs $60,000 to $134,500 for a standard court, or $64,000 to $154,500 for panoramic.

What an outdoor court has to deal with
- Rain: the base needs a slight fall or drains so water does not sit under the turf.
- Wind: glass walls catch the wind, so the anchors and base are engineered for your area.
- Sun: running the court north to south keeps the low sun out of players' eyes.
- Rust: outdoor steel should be galvanized or primed, not just painted.
- Neighbors: lights and noise can matter to your town, your HOA and the people next door.
- Frost and heat: the base and turf have to cope with your climate.

What a good quote includes
Ask for these six points in writing. Two quotes that cover them can be compared line by line.
Drainage plan
How water leaves the court: the slope of the base (FIP allows up to 1%) or drains through the edge beam.
Wind design
The wind speed the court and base are designed for, from the building code for your county.
Rust protection
Galvanizing, zinc primer and powder coat on the steel, and how long the finish is guaranteed.
Turf for outdoors
Turf type, sand fill and UV resistance, and when it will need topping up or replacing.
Lighting plan
Pole height, number of fixtures, light levels and shields to keep light off neighbors.
Permits and HOA
Who handles zoning, the building permit and any HOA or design review.

Site check
The builder checks the ground, slope, drainage, access, power and sun, and agrees the layout.
Engineering and permits
An engineer designs the base and anchors for your soil and wind; the drawings go to the town.
Base
The site is dug and drained, then a reinforced slab or asphalt base is laid with a slight fall.
Court and lights
The court goes up in a few days, the turf is laid, lights are wired and the court is handed over.
Questions people ask
What base does an outdoor padel court need?
An engineered, reinforced concrete slab or a two-layer asphalt base on free-draining stone, with a concrete edge beam to hold the posts. The LTA guidance suggests a fall of no more than 1 in 100. Your engineer sets the thickness for your soil.
Which way should an outdoor padel court face?
The FIP rules recommend running the long axis north to south, so the sun rises and sets to the side rather than behind either end.
Can outdoor padel courts handle rain?
Yes, if the base drains. A slight slope or a drain through the edge beam carries water away, and sand-filled turf dries quickly. Puddles under the turf usually mean the base or drainage was not designed for the site.
Do outdoor padel courts need lights?
Only if you play after dark. A four-pole LED system typically costs $8,000 to $18,000 installed. Check your town's lighting rules and how close the nearest homes are first.
Can I add a roof later?
Sometimes. A canopy needs its own engineered foundations and a permit, and published prices run $160,000 to $380,000 per court. Tell the builder at the start if you might add one, so the layout leaves room.
Are padel courts noisy?
Padel balls are softer than pickleballs, and reports from US projects suggest fewer noise complaints, but the ball still makes a sound on the glass and players talk. Courts close to homes may get questions from neighbors or the town.
