Indoor padel courts

An indoor padel court fits inside a warehouse, barn, sports hall or new building with at least 6 m (19 ft 8 in) of clear height. Indoors there is no wind load or drainage to design for, so the court itself is often simpler to install, but the building is the big variable. In an existing building with a sound floor, a panoramic court with lights typically costs $39,000 to $116,500 per court; the building, its roof and any heating or cooling are extra.

Why clubs and owners build indoors

  • Year-round play in cold, hot or rainy climates.
  • No wind loads on the glass, and no drainage under the turf.
  • Lights and noise stay inside, which can make permits and neighbors easier.
  • Bookings do not depend on the weather, which helps a club plan its schedule.
  • Empty warehouses and retail units can often be converted.
  • The catch: you need enough height, and the building costs far more than the court.

What a good quote includes

Ask for these six points in writing. Two quotes that cover them can be compared line by line.

  1. Measured clear height

The lowest beam, duct or light over the court, measured on site. FIP asks for 6 m minimum.

  2. Floor check

Whether the slab is level enough and strong enough for the court anchors, and any repairs needed.

  3. Lighting design

Fittings at least 6 m up, light levels for your use, and no glare for players looking up at lobs.

  4. Building permits

Change of use, fire exits, accessibility and occupancy, which can apply when a building becomes a club.

  5. Climate

Heating, cooling or ventilation, and its effect on turf and glass condensation.

  6. Access

How the glass gets in: door sizes, a forklift route and space to unload.

How an indoor court project usually runs

  1. Building survey

The builder checks clear height, floor, columns, doors and power, and lays out how many courts fit.

  2. Permits

Your architect or contractor handles any change of use, fire and accessibility requirements with the town.

  3. Floor prep

The slab is checked, repaired or leveled, and anchor positions are marked.

  4. Install

The courts go up in a few days each, the turf is laid, and the lights are fitted and aimed.

Questions people ask

How tall does a building need to be for padel?

The FIP rules set at least 6 m (19 ft 8 in) of clear height over the whole court and suggest 8 m (26 ft 3 in) for new facilities. Some US builders recommend at least 24 ft, and about 36 ft for the best play.

Can I put a padel court in a warehouse?

Often, if the clear height, column spacing and floor work. Each court needs about 68 ft by 35 ft of floor without columns inside it. Zoning and change of use are usually the bigger questions.

What floor does an indoor padel court need?

A flat, solid slab that can take the court anchors. FIP asks for less than 3 mm of variation over 3 m on the playing surface. An existing floor may need leveling or a check of its thickness.

What lighting does an indoor padel court need?

The LTA guidance gives 300 lux for recreational and club play and 500 lux for national competition, with fittings at least 6 m above the court. Indoors, lights should sit outside the lob zone to avoid glare.

Is indoor padel more expensive to build?

The court is not, and can be cheaper with no wind engineering or drainage. The building is what costs more: published guides put indoor courts with building works at $70,000 to $100,000 or more per court.
